Back in the days when human waste wasn’t flushed away in sewers, Night Soil Men would cart it away from houses along with other refuse. Themselves and their cart horses became Boogeyman and ‘9 o’Clock Horses’ who would haunt children who weren’t asleep by a certain time or misbehaved.
